HD, Full HD, 4K and UHD: what the labels mean
Picture quality labels are used loosely, so here is what each one means in practice:
- SD (standard definition): the old broadcast quality. Fine on a phone, soft on a large TV.
- HD (720p): clearly sharper, and perfectly watchable on most screens.
- Full HD (1080p): the everyday standard for living-room TVs. Most IPTV Full HD streams look crisp on a TV up to around 50 inches.
- 4K / UHD (2160p): four times the pixels of Full HD. IPTV UHD makes the biggest difference on large screens and for fast-moving content such as sport and nature films.
In everyday speech, 4K and UHD mean the same thing. When we talk about iptv premium 4k streams, we mean channels and titles delivered at that resolution from a source that genuinely exists in 4K.
Which plan gives you 4K or 8K?
Picture quality is the main difference between our three plans, all of which last 12 months:
- Standard: HD and Full HD. The base offer, and all an HD television can display.
- Premium: HD plus 4K, with adult content and IBO Player activation included for one year.
- VIP: HD, 4K and 8K, with the same adult content and IBO Player activation for one year.
8K is still rare, both in content and in televisions, so VIP mainly makes sense if you already own an 8K set. For most 4K TVs, Premium covers everything the screen can show. Whichever plan you choose, one subscription plays on one device at a time.
4K IPTV UK: internet speed per screen
The internet speed for 4K IPTV is the question we are asked most. These are practical guide figures per screen, assuming a stable connection:
| Quality | Suggested steady speed per screen |
|---|---|
| SD | 5 Mbit/s |
| HD / Full HD | 10 Mbit/s |
| 4K / UHD | 25 Mbit/s |
Add the figures up for every screen in use at the same time, then leave some headroom for phones, laptops and game consoles. Two 4K screens plus a household’s normal usage can call for well over 50 Mbit/s in the evening.
For 4K IPTV UK viewing, the type of line matters. Full fibre from BT, Sky Broadband, TalkTalk, Plusnet or one of the independent fibre networks gives plenty of headroom, and the full-fibre rollout is reaching more streets each year. Virgin Media cable is usually fast enough too. On fibre to the cabinet lines, speeds vary with your distance from the street cabinet, so test in the evening before relying on 4K. Our article on internet speed for IPTV covers testing in more depth.
Devices and TVs that handle 4K well
An IPTV subscription 4K stream, on Premium or VIP, needs a device that can decode it smoothly. In general:
- Recent Samsung and LG Smart TVs with 4K panels handle 4K streams in the major player apps.
- Fire TV Stick 4K models are a popular and affordable choice, especially for older TVs that lack good apps.
- Android TV and Google TV devices with 4K output work well with apps such as TiviMate.
- Apple TV 4K is a strong performer for viewers already using Apple devices.
Very old Smart TVs, even with 4K screens, can struggle with the processing needed for high-bitrate streams. If 4K stutters while HD plays smoothly, the device is often the bottleneck rather than the broadband. Check also that your HDMI cable and port support 4K if you use an external stick or box.
Wi-Fi versus Ethernet for 4K
For 4K, a wired connection is the single best upgrade most homes can make. Wi-Fi speed drops with every wall and floor, and brick and plaster walls common in British houses are particularly good at blocking signal.
Your options, from most to least reliable:
- Ethernet cable straight from the router to the TV or stick.
- Powerline adapters, which carry the connection through your home’s electrical wiring.
- Mesh Wi-Fi, with a unit placed in the same room as the TV.
- Standard Wi-Fi, which can work well if the router is in the same room.
If your provider’s router sits in the hallway, moving it or adding a mesh point often improves 4K more than any broadband upgrade.
Why some channels are only in HD
Not every channel is produced in 4K. Many broadcasters create their programmes in HD or Full HD, and a stream can never be sharper than its source. When a 4K TV shows an HD channel, it upscales the picture, which looks good but not as detailed as native 4K.
That is why we describe 4K as available “where the source allows”. If particular 4K content matters to you, ask in the chat before ordering and we will tell you honestly what is available.
Getting the most from your subscription
To sum up: choose Premium or VIP, check your evening speed, connect the TV by cable if you can, use a device that handles 4K and set your app to its highest quality. If you use IBO Player, its activation for a year is already part of both plans. The IPTV subscription UK page explains the plans, and the IPTV free trial page shows how to ask about testing on your own set-up first.
